Monmouth and Brecon Canal: Llangatock to Brecon 29 June 2024

Having had a good nights sleep in the Old Rectory Hotel an early start was made. The canal is at the edge of the hotel property so access is easy.

After 8 miles I  got to Talybont where I discovered, (due to my early start) the pub didnt open for another hour and the next bus was in 2 hours so I decided to keep on walking to Brecon for a coffee. It wouldnt take too long as I had already done this part of the canal so there wouldnt need to be any sightseeing!

The additional 8 miles to the Brecon canal basin took 2.5 hours after which the coffee and recovery cake was had. I then caught the bus from Brecon Bus station back to Abergavenny where I caught the train back to Malvern

Monmouth and Brecon Canal: Abergavenny to Llangatock 28 June 2024

 Having walked part of this canal during the HF holidays weekend in Brecon, I felt the urge to do the whole route

I caught the train from Malvern to Hereford to Abergavenny. The train from hereford had an engine and coaches!

The station is a fair way out of town so i walked into the centre and got a picnic from Morrisons

I walked past the castle and through the park before crossing the river bridge

 and followed the tramway route up to the canal.

Very conveniently at the midpoint between abergavenny and Talybont there was the Old vicarage hotel at Llanfoist which adjoins the canal so I stayed there overnight in a attic room (mind the roof beams!) with jacuzzi, just the thing for aching legs! I did visit crickhowell across the main road on the other side of the valley (3 mile round trip!) for coffee and cake to celebrate. I also found a lemon zester in their hardware store!
